Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth largest city in the whole United States. Its nickname is the “City of Brotherly Love” which comes from the Greek philos which means love, and adelphos which means brother. Like many other cities and states, Philadelphia was first inhabited by the Lenape Indian tribes. In the early 1600’s, Europeans founded their first settlements. In 1681, Charles II of England granted William Penn a charter for Pennsylvania colony which he planned to create a colony on the Delaware River to serve as a primary place of government and a port. Philadelphia is noted for its various contributions to art and culture including starting the Philadelphia soul.
When visiting Philadelphia, there are many national historical sites and parks that can be both fun and educational. There is Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed. There is also the Liberty bell, Edgar Allan Poe’s home and the First and second banks of the United States. Philadelphia has also the Rodin Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
